Progressive correctional facilities in Missouri have teamed with local shelters and organizations such as CHAMPs and others to train dogs for loving homes or utility work such as bomb sniffing and assistance work. Jefferson City, Vandalia, Cameron, and St. Joseph MO are piloting this win-win program with shelter dogs that would otherwise be euthanized. Fifteen selected inmates per facility are given “less adoptable” dogs for an 8 week period, during which time they are trained to be good companions for their forever-homes. Inmates keep diaries on the dogs training and behavior while they simultaneously learn responsibility and selflessness in the process. None of us are able to foster 90 dogs a year but we can support this program and save 90 lives a year without adding costs to our community or shelters.

St. Joseph and Cameron facilities are seeking guidance and support to train staff and inmates on handling skills. Safe Harbor and TAILs rescue are providing dogs and support.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTING IN DONATING OR VOLUNTEERING FOR THIS EFFORT PLEASE CALL:  Lori Schultz, 816-987-2131, karstmamma@yahoo.com
