Taking KC No-Kill

KCDA intends to use this blog to chronicle our journey in taking the KC to a No-Kill status by 2012. We support and promote the ideals of the No-Kill Solution as described by Nathan Winograd and others, such as Bill Bruce's model in Calgary, Canada.

KCDA's Roots

I will be backdating a few posts as I've gotten off to a slow start. This post is a brief outline of what KCDA is, where it started and where we hope to go.

KCDA started in the Fall of 2005 to work on the legislative aspect of animal welfare. Breed Specific Legislation was high on our list as "pit bulls" were the target of some of the worst laws ever created.

None of us were "breed enthusiasts". We were just folks that happened to be chosen by dogs with blocky heads and were forced by ignorant, and sometimes downright evil, city council people, to fight for our rights to keep our dog and keep others from being killed for nothing more than their looks.

It was quickly obvious that rescue alone was not going to save these dogs. For every dog you fostered there were a hundred more you had to leave behind. For every city that passed a ban, there were a thousand fewer homes available to adopt them. Although there were individuals that had been fighting these laws for 20 years, there was no group we were aware of that made this their specialty. Saving one wasn't enough, we wanted to save them all.

As things progressed it was obvious that pit bulls weren't the only ones that needed saving. It had never occured to us that you could be fined for feeding stray cats - what!? So even though we were "dog" advocates we fight for them all.

Bad policy and laws are needlessly killing animals more than any other single issue. And that's why we're here...
