Dear Kansas City Dog Advocates,

A new state bill before your senate, SB 886, would allow any Missouri village, town or city to adopt regulations to control vicious or dangerous dogs but importantly, the bill prevents communities from discriminating against any breed of dog.

There is no evidence that breed-specific laws reduce dog bites, while there is significant evidence that well-enforced, breed-neutral laws do. Both KCDA and the ASPCA believe that laws like SB 886, which regulate dogs individually, can help keep communities safe.

What You Can Do
Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center to send an email to your state senator and to the committee currently considering SB 886. The email urges the senators to support this humane legislation.

***Please stress in your letter that you support SB 886 as originally filed. We've been told the Humane Society of the US (HSUS) is pressuring the bill sponsor to revise the proposed bill to allow for Mandatory Spay Neuter of specific breeds. While we do support voluntary low-cost spay/neuter programs in conjunction with education, we do not support breed-specific mandatory spay/neuter because it is just another form of breed-specicifl legislation.***
