 Prairie Village, KS Minimize

Updated 4/14/10

Prairie Village has a long-standing ban on 'pit bull' type dogs that really prevents it from being a pet-friendly city. Pet-friendly refers to all pets, not just some of them.

While the city's pet limit is very low, they do regularly grant exceptions for people who desire to own more than the current limit.

  • Steve Noll (Incumbent)   - Mr. Noll is a pet owner, who currently owns a dog he adopted from Animal Haven and previously owned a cat also from Animal Haven. He is familiar with the No Kill Movement and is a strong advocate of the movement. Mr. Noll thought TNR was rather cruel, but he gets a pass, he understands the practice to be one of caring fro an animal then withdrawing the care and returning it to the wild to live out its life. He was not aware of Prairie Village having Breed Specific Legislation and was planning on researching BSL -- because he questioned the effectiveness of that type of ordinance. Mr. Noll felt PV's pet limits were ok and felt that pet limits were necessary to allow civil authorities to deal with situations of excessive animals that are suffering. He feels Animal Control served a necessary function and that Prairie Village's wer fair and humane and supportive of pet-owning households.  (Term Expires 2014)

  • Andrew Wang  - Mr. Wang is the owner of a dog and a turtle. He is opposed to breed specific legislation and is aware of the city's current ban on 'pit bull' type dogs. He does believe it is reasonable to regulate the number of pets someone has -- and is not familiar with a method of exceeding the current pet limit without introducing additional administrative burdens on the city staff.  On the rest of our questions, Mr. Wang acknowledged not being completely aware of all the issues in regards to mandatory spay/neuter or TNR programs. Term Expires 2012

Council Member - Ward 4     (4 year term)

  • Laura Wassmer (Incumbent)

  • Term Expires 2014
  • Diana Ewy Sharp (Term Expires 2012) -  Ms. Sharp used to have pets (dogs, hampsters, guinea pigs, fish) but does have any at the moment. She is not familiar with the No Kill Movement. She feels as if Prarie Village's animal conrol officers are highly professional and serve the community well - -and is supportive of their current policies. She feels like Prairie VIllage is pet friendly and since it is a family oriented community, she understands that with that, comes pets. She feels that PV currently provides amenitites for pet owners with terrific parks and sidewalks to safely walk dogs. The city also provides waste bags and animal drinking fountains. Ms. Sharp agrees with the current pet limit law and believes it serves their landlocked town well. She noted that Prairie Village has a n Animal Control Advisory Committee which is comprised of interested residents and local veterinarians who offer input to the staff and city council. She is supportive of pet-related community events such as the pet fair put on by the police department and ACO's.  Ms. Sharp has no strong opinion on mandatory spay/neuter oridnances -- saying it would depend on the circumstances the community was faced with, says she needs more information on TNR -- which has not been an issue in Prairie Village and supports the city's current breed ban. While most of her answers are solid, the idea of prohibiting certain types of dogs from the community because of how they look is enough to warrant her ranking. Term expires 2012
