Council Member - Ward 1 (3 year term)
Daniel P. Pflumm - Mr. Pflumm is the owner of two dogs - one Labrador and one American Eskimo. He was not at all familiar with the No Kill movement until after doing research on the subject after receiving our questionaire. He has no opinion on it at this time. He does believe that animal control plays an important role in protection of citizens and believes Shawnee is a pet-friendly community. Pflumm has no stated opinion on the city's feral cat policies or on their current breed ban.
Term Expires 2013

David Morris - Mr. Morris is a cat owner (KCDA likes cats too!) who is not familiar with the No Kill movement. He believes that animal control plays an important role in public safety but did not describe it that way. Morrise said that he doesn't believe that feral cats are a high priority for the voters he's talked to (which is probably true - but doesn't eliminate that it is important). On the topic of BSL, he notes that he has been bitten by a 'pit bull', Doberman and also a German Shepherd. Apparently the campaign trail has been hard on Mr. Morris. Morris believs that Shawnee's pet limits are "fine" but supports the special permits that allow for more animals if owners show themselves to be responsible. Morris is interested in more information about these topics if he is elected. Term Expires 2013

Jeff Vaught
- Mr. Vaught is a dog owner - -a Bichon Frise named Lucy. He is only somewhat familiar with the No Kill movement but is willing to learn more about it. He feels like animal control's responsibility is to take action when dogs are running freely in neighborhoods, but feels like they should always try first to reunite the pet with the owner. He is very much in favor of less government in our daily lives, and as such, is against a lot of the laws that lead to increased shelter kiling (we like that). He is not opposed to TNR programs, but doesn't feel as if it is something the city should spend money on. But he is opposed to the city prosecuting people who care for colonies. He is against breed-specific legislation -- acknowledging that good owners raise good pets and that bad pets are a product of bad owners. He realizes that if you focus on the types of people who are neglegent about how they care for their dogs, that there is no need for a breed-specific law. He also says he has a fondness for Rottweilers. He realizes that universal pet limits are unfair -- as there is a "big difference" between someone with four yorkies someone who has four large dogs. And that the rule isn't relevant to people who live with larger areas to work with. He is sensitive to how someone with a lot of unruly pets could negatively impact surround homeowners, but seems open to viable solutions. Overall, our conversation with Mr. Vaught was very pleasant and we feel like he is very sincere in his points of view. Term expires 2013.

Michelle Distler (Incumbent)

- Ms. Distler is the owner of a rescue dog and has rescued several cats in the past. She claims knowledge of the No Kill movement and supports it. She things that Shawnee being 'pet friendly' is important. She is familiar with good TNR programs because she has a neighbor that is caring for a feral cat. She does not believe breed bans. She notes that she has been bitten several times by other types of dogs and finds it insulting that people would pick on Staffordshires who are regarded as the "nanny dog" in Europe because of their gentle nature. She has consistantly voted in favor of increasing pet limits in the city. Term expires 2013
Michael Sandifer
- Mr. Sandifer admits to not being familiar with the No Kill movement -- and many of his answers seem to reflect someone who is well-meaning, animal lover, but under-informed on the topic -- which is understandable and fine because he is open to hearing more about the issues. Sandifer thinks Shawnee being a pet-friendly city is important. He thinks it should be fine to feed and care for feral cat colonies, and while he says he doesn't have the ability to change the current breed ban, he does support relocating the dogs of banned breeds to other areas.
