 Westwood, KS Minimize

Updated 4/14/10

By most accounts, Westwood is a pet-friendly city. However, the city has had a ban on "pit bulls" for over two decades. The time has come for the city to update its dangerous dog law to be focused on the behavior of the animal, and not based on breed.

  • Mayor

    Steve Stubbers

    At-Large Council Members

Paul Day -  Mr. Day is a pet owner -- owning one dog and one cat. While he is not familiar with the no kill movement, he generally supports the idea of reducing/stopping the euthanizing of unwanted dogs and cats. He feels like the role of animal control is important because stray animals can be a public safety issue. He thinks Westwood is a pet friendly city, and likes that the city council regularly grants variances from the pet limit ordinance. He does not have a lot of information about TNR programs or Mandatory spay/neuter ordinances, so has no opinion on those at this time -- but is open to learning more. Mr. Day does not favor breed specific regulations -- and believes the problem resied in how dogs are socialized by the people who own them. He favors the current pet limit with the ability for people to apply for variences.

John Ye - John Ye is a pet owner, he owns a cat.  He is not familiar with the No Kill Movement until he read our website.  John believes Westwood to be pet friendly and mentioned that many times city council makes exceptions for over the pet limit if the pet is in a good home environment.  He is opposed to TNR, but from his response it appears he doesn't understand the concept.  John felt MSN was only necessary in homes that were not responsible.  As far as laws like  BSL, he felt he did not know enough about the breed or history of the ordinance and suspected the ban was passed due to a specific incident.  All in all John needs more education about effective AW laws, and sounds open to learning more

David Buck  -  David Buck is an owner of 2 dogs and 1 cat.  He believed the No Kill Movement is ‘idealized” and perhaps needs more education on this matter.  He feels Westwood is a pet friendly city.  As far as MSN he feels that is unnecessary, and TNR is not always a good idea.  David feels that the current pet limits in Westwood of 2 dogs and 2 cats is ok.  His stance on BSL – “unfortunate, but see both sides of the issue”.  From Mr. Buck’s responses it sounds like more education on the goal of the No Kill Movement could be of benefit
